After Leeds had taken a fourteenth minute lead, Derek Hall equalised for Halifax five minutes later. Four minutes from time Leeds-born Andy Watson scored the winner for the home team. For Leeds, Gary Williams replaced Mike Whitlow at Left Back at half-time and Simon Grayson replaced Centre Forward Ian Baird in the fifty-eighth minute. Halifax made a double substitution in the sixty-third minute when William Barr replaced inside left Brian Butler and Brown came on for Derek Hall at outside left. The game was played behind closed doors. The referee was R. Poulain of Huddersfield.
